Winfield Correctional Facility inmate dies after COVID-19 diagnosis

An inmate at the Winfield Correctional Facility has died after being diagnosed with COVID-19.   This is the first coronavirus-related death for the Winfield facility and the 20th death in the Kansas correctional system.

Officials said the inmate tested positive for the virus on February 4th and was admitted to the hospital several days later.  He died on February 24th, and he had underlying medical concerns that contributed to his condition.

He was a 62-year-old man who was serving a 226-month sentence for child sex crimes, and he had been in the corrections system since 2011.
