Sedgwick County is expected to move the range for the COVID-19 vaccine to people 65 and older as soon as next week. The county has been focusing on people 70 and older along with teachers and health care workers.
County Manager Tom Stolz says health officials are watching how fast the slots are filling up at the vaccination clinic, and if that slows down this weekend, that could allow for a lowering of the age limit. He said people should be prepared to wait a week or ten days for an appointment as the demand picks up.
The county began offering vaccinations at the former downtown library on February 22nd, moving the main site from the INTRUST Bank Arena. Stolz said it’s expected that the library site will continue to operate into July.
In a media briefing Wednesday, Stolz said the county is working with 80 pharmacies to distribute the vaccine, and he said the county is well positioned to get the vaccine to everyone who wants it. He said he’s hopeful that the county can get enough vaccine so that people who want it can have it by early summer.
