Kansas residents who are struggling to cover rent and utility payments due to the COVID-19 pandemic could qualify for up to 12 months of emergency assistance.
New federal funding through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 has provided the state of Kansas with $200 million to support housing stability and prevent evictions and homelessness.
The Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) and the City of Wichita will be administering the funds.
Tenants may qualify for assistance if they earn no more than 80% of their area’s median income, are experiencing documented financial hardship as a direct result of the pandemic and may be at risk of homelessness without assistance.
Wichita residents can apply for the program through the Wichita Emergency Rental Assistance Program (WERAP), which will be accepting applications on February 22nd.
Those outside of the Wichita area can apply through the Kansas Emergency Rental Assistance (KERA) program. That application process will begin on March 15th.
