Governor signs two executive orders for COVID-19 recovery

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly said Wednesday she has signed two executive orders to help with recovery efforts from the coronavirus pandemic.

One order will allow Kansas employers to continue to withhold income taxes based on the state of the employee’s primary work location, not based on the state in which the employee is temporarily teleworking.    The governor said this will make sure tax season can go on as normal for businesses that have adjusted working schedules and employee work sites to keep people safe during the pandemic.

The second executive order will extend a number of previous executive orders that are due to expire on January 26th.  Because the Kansas Legislature has voted to extend the state of disaster emergency until March 31st, these executive orders will also have to be extended.   The orders deal with tax deadlines and payments, professional and occupational licenses, a temporary ban on certain foreclosures and evictions, provisions on drivers’ licenses and vehicle registration, and other issues.

Governor Kelly said the executive orders will allow the state to continue responding to the pandemic and help with efforts to keep Kansans healthy, keep businesses open, and get children back to school as quickly as possible.
