New health order changes face mask definition for Sedgwick County

Sedgwick County’s local health officer has issued a new public health order for the coronavirus pandemic, and it clarifies some definitions for face masks.

Dr. Garold Minns said in a press release that wearing masks has helped to move COVID-19 numbers down, and he expressed thanks to residents for wearing masks and encouraging others to wear masks in public.

People are still required to wear masks or face coverings in public spaces.  Children 5 years of age and younger are not required to wear a mask, and there are exemptions for people with health issues that would prevent them from wearing a mask.

Masks or other face coverings that have valves or vents allowing air to be exhaled do not fit the definition of masks under the order.   Face shields are still allowed under the order.

There is still a limit of 2,000 people on attendance at entertainment venues, but venues can submit a plan to Dr. Minns for approval for events with a higher attendance.  Bars, nightclubs and restaurants will still have to operate at 50 percent of fire code capacity and they will have to close to the public at 11 p.m.   They can continue carryout and curbside services after that time.

The order limits groups to 15 people and they must be located at least six feet away from other groups.   People attending public gatherings are still required to wear a mask.

The order goes into effect Wednesday, September 9th and will remain in place until at least midnight on October 21st.
