Wichita schools looking at new options for the start of classes

Wichita school board members are considering a start to the school year with online classes, instead of having students return to the classroom.

Board members heard concerns about health and safety from teachers and students during a workshop meeting Monday.  The board has approved a plan that will have a mix of in-person classes and two options for online learning.   The school year begins September 8th.

Sedgwick County has been just above ten percent in the number of positive tests compared to total testing for COVID-19.   Kansas education officials are recommending against classroom learning until the number drops below ten percent.

The board is looking at different options for the new school year.  One would have classroom learning for pre-kindergarten through 8th grade and remote learning for high school students.   Another option would have online learning for all students during the first semester.

The board will meet Thursday to make a decision.
