GNC has filed for bankruptcy and plans to close up to 1,200 stores, including five in Kansas.

The vitamin and dietary supplement company has nearly $1 billion in debt and has faced declining sales at its stores for several months, and the company said the coronavirus pandemic with stay-at-home orders has had a dramatic negative impact on its business.

The company plans to close 20 percent of its retail stores, and it hopes to emerge from bankruptcy in the fall.

The stores in Kansas that will be closing are locations in Hutchinson, Topeka, Leawood, Chanute and Lawrence.
