The United Way of the Plains in Wichita is now taking appointments for a help center to provide assistance to people who have been financially affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
People who have been laid-off or furloughed due to the coronavirus or downsizing in the aviation industry can make appointments. United Way president Pat Hanrahan said the center will provide emergency financial assistance to help with food, utilities and shelter needs. There will also be budget and debt management counseling, help in applying for government programs, help with job training and job search assistance, and information on continuing education.
People can call 211 this week between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to set up an appointment. The deadline is May 15th and sessions will begin June 1st. Hanrahan says people will have to have documentation to show they have been laid off.
Hanrahan said the help center will have pandemic safety measures in place, and people will be required to wear masks when they go in for the appointment.
The help center is funded through the United Way’s Pandemic Fund, and donations can be made to that fund through the web site unitedwayplains.org or they can mail checks to United Way of the Plains, 245 N. Water St. Wichita, KS 67202. Donors should write “Pandemic Fund” in the memo line on the check.
