Three new cases of coronavirus have been reported in northeast Kansas, bringing the state’s total to 11 cases.

Kansas Department of Health and Environment secretary Lee Norman said Monday that the new cases are people who had contact at a social gathering with someone who was reported last week as positive.  The new cases are in Johnson County, bringing that county’s total to eight cases.  Butler, Wyandotte and Franklin counties each have one case.

Dr. Norman said around 85 patients and health care workers have tested negative for the virus at a long-term care facility in Kansas City, Kansas.  That’s where a Wyandotte County man had been confirmed to have the COVID-19 virus, and that man died.   Health officials are still working to find out how the man contracted the virus, and who he had contact with.

Governor Laura Kelly said she has issued an executive order to ban all public gatherings of more than 50 people, in line with the newest guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control.   She said it’s an essential step to encourage social distancing and stem the spread of the virus.
