The Kansas Humane Society has had to suspend intakes and adoptions of cats and kittens at its Wichita shelter because of cases of feline parvovirus, which is highly contagious.
Humane Society spokesman Aaron Walker said “we have to be extremely, extremely careful at this time.” He said the agency has isolated activities with cats for the next week and then will assess the situation.
Walker said some dogs at the shelter have had kennel cough, but they can still be adopted or fostered. He said the shelter continues to be at capacity, and the Humane Society is looking for people who can adopt or foster dogs.
Walker said there was one day last month where around 20 dogs and 47 cats were brought to the shelter in one day.
