The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to watch out for a telephone scam that has been reported in recent days.

People claiming to be employees of the Sheriff’s Office have been calling some residents, falsely informing them that they are the subject of a criminal investigation. The caller then demands the payment of large sums of cash to avoid prosecution.

The Sheriff’s Office said it does not solicit payment for any fines over the phone or in person.   The scammers will sometimes use “spoofing” on Caller ID to make the phone calls look legitimate.

Residents are urged to avoid giving any personal information over the phone to someone making a claim like this.   If you want to verify a phone call, you can call the Sheriff’s Office at 316-660-3880.   If you have been a victim of a scam like this, you should report it to your local law enforcement agency.
