Man injured in fire at illegal dump site in Harvey County

Local, state and federal officials are investigating an illegal dumping and burning site east of Burrton in Harvey County.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the 1900 block of S. Sand Hill Rd. Thursday morning after a report of a man who was injured by an outdoor fire. The man was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.

Emergency responders found an illegal dump site at the location, where the man is alleged to have been burning off materials for disposal. Investigators identified the materials as a combination of substances used in paints, paint thinners and nail polish removers.

Officials said there are no known community impacts and the incident remains under investigation.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal, Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency will determine any additional actions related to the site. Burrton Fire/EMS, Burrton Police Department, Newton Fire/EMS, Sedgwick County Fire Department, Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and Harvey County Emergency Management also assisted in the response.
