The Sedgwick County Zoo announced Thursday that its 25-year-old Eastern Black Rhino, Bibi, has died.
Officials said that Bibi died on Wednesday after showing signs of the abdominal condition known as colic. The rhino did not respond to treatment, and the zoo made the decision to euthanize her to alleviate her suffering. Veterinarians later determined Bibi had a severe torsion of her large intestine, which is a common cause of death for her species.
The zoo said Bibi introduced important genetic diversity to the Eastern Black Rhino population as one of the first animals in the Species Survival Program.
