Wichita will see the return of motorcycles on city streets as the weather improves, and Wichita Police are urging residents, motorists, and motorcyclists to be cautious.

In a press release issued earlier this week, the Wichita Police Department says that while the majority of the city’s riding population is cautious and safety minded, it has noticed an increased amount of riders who are operating in an unsafe and sometimes reckless manner.

High-risk riding habits such as riding between vehicles, weaving in and out of traffic, driving at high speeds, running red lights, and riding in a wheelie are just some of the behaviors seen – and some of these motorcycles are not even legal to be operated on city streets.

Police say that when motorcycle riders engage in these reckless driving behaviors, they are risking not only their own safety but the safety of those around them. WPD cited the February 20th hit-and-run crash that killed 48-year-old Kristine Sheffield, resulting in 1st Degree Murder charges for 21-year-old Chase Faimon late last month.

The WPD is asking residents to not only watch for motorcycles and be extra vigilant, but also for motorcyclists to ride safely.
