A home was severely damaged in a North Wichita fire early Monday morning, and Fire Officials are using it as an opportunity to advise residents to take proper winter precautions.

The Wichita Fire Department responded to the 1700 block of North St. Francis around 1 a.m. Monday after a report of smoke inside of the home. Officials said one person was able to make it out safely.

Investigations revealed that the home’s floor furnace was the cause of the blaze, leading the fire department to remind residents about the importance of maintaining them. Officials said these types of furnaces are common throughout the city and can often ignite a fire as a result of negligent maintenance, or by leaving combustibles on top of the furnace grate. They added that it is important to properly maintain all heating appliances during the winter months as a preventative measure.
