Kelly’s mask mandate may apply to state colleges

Governor Kelly’s mask mandate for state employees takes effect Monday, and it will likely apply to the state’s colleges.

This mask mandate requires all state workers and visitors to state buildings to wear masks, when social distancing is not possible. This is regardless of vaccination or recovery status.

K-State has already announced its own mask mandate. Wichita State says they likely fall under Kelly’s order, so students, staff, and visitors may be required to wear face coverings indoors. School officials are waiting for confirmation before a final decision in made. The entire statement from WSU is below.

In response to the increasing community spread of the COVID Delta variant – Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced a new mask requirement for state employees and in state facilities that will go into effect Monday, Aug. 2.

In her news conference, Gov. Kelly stated that all state employees and visitors inside state facilities will be required to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status.

At this time, we believe this new mandate applies to all WSU employees, students and campus visitors. However, we are still awaiting final confirmation.

We will communicate that information to the campus community once we know more.

I feel confident that we can handle this change as we’ve handled so many others. I implore those of you in Shocker Nation to get vaccinated against COVID-19 if you are able.

Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving situation.

Sincerely,

Rick Muma, President
