The Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Chiefs issued a statement Friday saying they will be committed to staying in Jackson County, Missouri if voters extend a three-eighths of a cent sales tax for another 40 years.

The tax proposal is not officially on the ballot, and Jackson County Commissioners will have to decide this month whether to put it up for a vote in April.

In their statement, the Royals and Chiefs said that as part of a proposed agreement with Jackson County, they have agreed to provide more than $200 in new economic benefits to Jackson County over the next 40 years with a new lease agreement.   The Chiefs would make major renovations to Arrowhead Stadium while the Royals will build a new downtown stadium and privately fund a $1 billion ballpark district.

The Royals announced in 2021 that they were looking at the potential of building a new downtown ballpark.

Jackson County officials say no agreement has been finalized with either the Royals or the Chiefs.
