A class action lawsuit has been filed in federal court in Wichita by people who live in the area of a contaminated groundwater site on the city ‘s north side.

The lawsuit concerns the area of 29th and Grove, which has been the subject of several recent public meetings to talk about cleanup efforts and health screening for area residents.

It’s believed that a spill at a Union Pacific railyard in the 1970s or 80s led to contamination of the groundwater with Trichloroethylene or TCE.   The lawsuit alleges that Union Pacific knew about the release and the leak of contaminants at the site and concealed information on the release.

The lawsuit claims that Union Pacific has mishandled toxic substances, disposed of hazardous wastes near homes and mishandled the cleanup of the substances.
