A northeast Kansas woman is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from her employer.

68-year-old Rita Hartman of Atchison was arraigned Monday in federal court for stealing from the Muddy River Credit Union in Atchison. Hartman managed the credit union from the early 1990s through January 2021, and she is accused of crediting fraudulent deposits from loan payments to her or her relatives’ accounts, stealing cash deposits and altering the credit union’s books and records.

Hartman was appointed to the Kansas Credit Council by former Kansas Governor Sam Brownback in 2013.
