Voters choose candidates for Wichita City Council, school board seats

Former television reporter Lily Wu and incumbent mayor Brandon Whipple were the leaders in Tuesday’s primary election for the Wichita mayor’s office, and they will move on to the November general election.

In Tuesday’s primary, Wu captured 11,763 votes for 30 percent of the vote while Whipple finished with 9,253, for 24 percent.   City Council member Bryan Frye was third in the balloting with 8,855 and Save Century II leader Celeste Racette was fourth with 6,594.    Former City Council member Jared Cerullo was next with 1,815 votes, followed by Julie Rose Stroud with 236, Sheila M. Davis (Rainman) with 230, Tom Kane with 206 and Anthony Gallardo with 168.

In the race for the District 4 seat on the Wichita City Council, Republican leader Dalton Glasscock had 2,308 votes and Judy Pierce had 1,111.  They will advance to the November election.   Incumbent Jeff Blubaugh is serving the second term of the two-term limit for council members.

Former Sedgwick County Commissioner Melody McCray Miller received the most votes for the at large seat on the Wichita Board of Education.  She received 14,178, while Brent Davis was second with 6,259.   McCray and Davis advance to the November election.

The results are unofficial until Sedgwick County Commissioners conduct a vote canvass on August 10th.  The turnout for the primary election was 15.33 percent, with 41,221 ballots that were cast in advance and on election day.
