Five people were hurt Tuesday evening when a van went off a highway in north Wichita and ended up submerged upside down in a pond.

The crash was reported around 6:45 p.m. at the ramp for southbound I-135 to southbound I-235 at the North Junction.   The van was on the southbound ramp when it went off the roadway and went down an embankment.

All five people in the van are from Wichita.  The driver, a 21-year-old man, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.   Two passengers, a 22-year-old man and a man whose age was not listed, were also reported to be seriously hurt.  Two other men, ages 21 and 22, had minor injuries.

The ramp was closed as crews worked to get to the victims and get the van out of the pond.
