Officials with the Wichita Fire Department said that a fire at a shopping center Thursday afternoon was caused by exploding propane tanks.

The 2-alarm fire broke out at a strip mall in the 2800 block of S. Greenwood, near Hydraulic and Wassall.

The fire impacted at least three businesses but damage was primarily contained to the exterior of the space near Hydraulic and Wassall.

Firefighters reported seeing several explosions as they arrived at the scene. Officials said there were eight, 100-pound propane cylinders, one of which went through the roof of a vacant house about 600 feet to the west, though it did not cause a fire at that location.

One man was injured as a result of the fire. That man reportedly transported himself to the hospital. The extent of his injuries is not known.
