Police are investigating an incident in west Wichita where an officer reported that shots were fired at him.
Officers have been working in an area near Westdale and Zoo Boulevard, and they have been asking people to stay out of that area.
Police lieutenant Aaron Moses said an officer was investigating a hit-and-run incident and he encountered a suspect on Westdale. The suspect fired several shots at the officer, but he was not hit. Moses said the officer did not return fire because of homes in the area. The suspect was found a short time later with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and he was taken to a hospital in very critical condition.
Police are still investigating and they have closed that area to traffic.
