A 34-year-old inmate at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility has died.
A deputy found the man unresponsive in a housing pod around 1 a.m. on Thursday, June 22nd. Medical and detention staff performed CPR until EMS arrive on scene.
The inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead soon after.
As per state statute, The Kansas Bureau of Investigations was contacted and Sheriff Investigations processed the scene. The inmate will be transported to the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office to determine an exact cause of death.
Preliminary reports indicate the inmate died from self-inflicted asphyxiation.
The inmate, described only as a Hispanic male from Wichita, had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since June 15th and had a preliminary hearing for one count of Aggravated Robbery on June 21st.
This is the second in-custody death of 2023.
