The United Way of the Plains released its findings for its annual Point in Time Homeless Count that was conducted in January.
Professionals as well as volunteers conducted the survey over a 24-hour period, and the results indicated that homelessness has increased slightly in Wichita/Sedgewick County.
702 people were identified as homeless in the area. This includes individuals living in transitional housing, emergency shelters, and safe havens–in addition to places not meant for human habitation such as vehicles or on the streets. The count does not include shelter capacity.
This marks a slight increase from 2022, with the number of homeless people going up by roughly 12 (1.7%). Of the 702 people identified, 150 (21%) were unsheltered.
The results are reported to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which you can view here.
