Kansas Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of a flat income tax will remain in place. The Kansas Senate failed Wednesday to override the governor’s veto of Senate Bill 160, which would have established a five-point-one-five-percent income tax rate for all taxpayers and accelerated the elimination of the state’s food sales tax to January 2024.

Critics of the bill had spoken out against the proposed flat income tax, and Kelly said the proposal would have cost the state more than one-point-three-billion-dollars over the next three years.   She said the flat tax would also have led to devastating funding cuts for public education.

The governor called on lawmakers to approve a $450 rebate for individual income taxpayers and $900 for married couples filing jointly.   There was no indication if that will be considered by lawmakers as they look to wrap up their work on Friday.
