Investigators say a homemade explosive may have been the cause of the April 9th explosion and fire at a Wichita home that left a resident dead.

Evidence was recovered from the home near Cardington and West Blake St.

On Thursday, a spokesperson with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said the explosion may have been caused by the “illegal manufacturing of improvised explosive devices.” However, officials added that an official determination on the cause of the blast can’t be made until results from the ATF’s forensics lab comes back.

Wichita Fire Department officials that responded to the scene initially said that fireworks were involved in the explosion.

Investigators say 47-year-old Kendal James was killed in the blast along with some family pets. No other injuries were reported.
