Fire broke out at an apartment complex in Wellington early Thursday morning, leaving several people homeless.

The fire was reported shortly before 6 a.m. at the Wheat Capital Manor apartment complex at 400 South C Street.  The fire broke out in a third floor apartment and police were evacuating residents when the first crews arrived.   The fire was contained to one apartment but the sprinkler system caused damage to apartments throughout the building.

Officials said the fire alarm and the sprinklers worked correctly and people were able to get out.  No injuries were reported.

The damage was estimated at $150,000 and the cause is believed to be burning material making contact with an oxygen line.

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter for displaced residents at the Wellington Hospital basement, 1323 North A Street.
