Wichita City Council members gave unanimous approval Tuesday to design concepts and funding for a project to reconstruct a street on the city’s north side.
The project involves 29th Street North from Broadway to I-135. Assistant City Engineer Paul Gunzelman said the project will widen 29th to five lanes from Emporia to the I-135 interchange. The intersections at St. Francis and Ohio will be reconstructed, and signals will be installed at St. Francis.
The project also calls for traffic signals at the southbound on-off ramp to I-135, along with the replacement of pavement.
Improvements for the intersection of 29th and Broadway are still being designed, and they will be presented to the City Council later.
The Council approved a budget of $3.5 million for construction, but the project will be returned to the Council later for approval of a final funding amount. Construction is expected to begin in 2024.
