The Wichita Fire Department is receiving a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that will provide for new firefighters.
Fire Chief Tammy Snow announced the grant Wednesday at a news conference. She said the $10.2 million grant will allow the department to hire 42 new firefighters, and that will provide for two additional truck companies as well as adding a fourth firefighter to the existing truck companies.
The grant is from FEMA’s SAFER program, which stands for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response. Snow said the addition of the truck companies and firefighters will provide for improved service and improved response times.
