Law enforcement and community partners in the Wichita area are working together to raise awareness of the dangers of fentanyl.

The drug has spread across the country and is often found in drugs that the end user may not believe to be fentanyl. This can quickly lead to a fatal overdose, especially among younger users who are not aware of what they are taking. A fatal dose of fentanyl can be extremely small, leading to the phrase “one pill can kill” being used in awareness materials.

In a conference Thursday morning, Interim WPD Chief, Lem Moore, said police can enforce laws and arrest people selling and distributing fentanyl, but police can’t arrest the problem away. It will take a coordinated effort between law enforcement and community members to fight the continued use of the drug.

Groups like the Youth Educational Empowerment program are working to spread the message of how dangerous fentanyl is. This will include efforts to get banners to local schools who want them. Crime Stoppers is offering $2500 rewards for tips that lead to the arrest of fentanyl wholesalers.
