Kansas voters have turned down an anti-abortion amendment to the state constitution.
In the final, unofficial results from Tuesday’s primary election, there were 534,134 no votes, for 59 percent, with 374,611 yes votes, for 41 percent.
The vote was considered the nation’s first test on abortion rights after the U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down the Roe vs. Wade ruling. Approval of the amendment would have removed the right to an abortion from the state constitution, allowing the Kansas Legislature to pass laws restricting abortion. With the no vote, the Kansas Constitution will remain unchanged.
Sedgwick County voters rejected the amendment with 81,134 no votes and 59,540 yes votes. The no votes made up 58 percent of the total count.
