A former detention deputy with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has been charged in connection with an incident involving trafficking of contraband in the county jail.

The deputy, 22-year-old Dustin Burnett of Maize, was arrested and then fired after an investigation.   Sheriff Jeff Easter said Burnett saw inmates making a large hole in a window to bring in contraband items, but he did nothing to stop it and did not report it.

A full search of the jail was conducted and deputies found a number of items, including shanks, a handcuff key wrapped in tape, marijuana, and phones.   Easter said there were plans to bring guns into the jail, but that was prevented.  This is believed to be tied to gang activity and steps are being taken to prevent people from getting close to jail windows from the outside.

Burnett was charged with two felony counts of official misconduct on Friday.  His bond was set at $150,000 and his next court appearance was scheduled for August 1st.
