Memorial Day is opening day for the six public swimming pools in Wichita.

The Aley, College Hill, Harvest, McAfee, Minisa and Orchard pools will be open Monday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  There will be a break at 5:15 with the pools reopening at 6:30.   The pools will be open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The city’s aquatics director, Joe Marten, said season swimming passes will be available and there will be swimming lessons from beginner to advanced.  More information is available at the city’s web site at www.wichita.gov/aquatics

Mayor Brandon Whipple says the city has enough staff to provide lifeguards for the pools and there are no staffing issues going into the summer.

The city’s splash pads will all be open, and they will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.   The pads at Buffalo, Evergreen and Osage parks opened two weeks ago and the remaining pads will be open starting Memorial Day.   The other pads are at Boston Park, Edgemoor Park, Fairmount Park, Linwood South Park, Riverside Central Park and the Old Town Plaza.    There is no admission fee for the splash pads.
