The Wichita Wind Surge baseball team has announced a $5,000 donation to the United Way of the Plains as the beginning of a season-long effort to support victims of the April 29th tornado in Andover.
The donation is from the Schwechheimer Family Foundation, a non-profit organization created to operate the Wichita Baseball Museum and to support non-profits and underserved youth in the community.
The donation is the first of several programs planned by the team for the 2022 season. Foundation president Jane Schwechheimer said in a press release that families will have a long road to recovery and the team will be supporting them in the long-term. The team plans to donate proceeds from upcoming jersey auctions held in conjunction with the Major League Baseball/Minor League Baseball memorabilia auction site. The team is also planning a school supply drive with donations earmarked for Prairie Creek Elementary School, which was heavily damaged by the tornado. Donations will also go to a Wind Surge Reading Program School and to the Andover YMCA. A back-to-school night is being planned for the fall.
More details on the upcoming fund-raising programs will be released on the team’s web site at WindSurge.com
