Sedgwick County leaders tour tornado damaged areas

Sedgwick County commissioners visited the areas damaged by the tornado that moved from east Wichita into the Andover area on Friday.    County officials continue to evaluate and assess the damage.

Up to a hundred structures were reported damaged in Sedgwick County, while close to 1,000 homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed in Andover.

Taskforce 5 from the Sedgwick County Fire Department has provided assistance to Andover and Butler County fire and rescue crews.  Rescue Teams 1 and 2 from the Wichita Fire Department were also helping in the damaged areas.

The United Way of the Plains has established a relief fund to help the people affected by the storm.  Information is available through the web site unitedwayplains.org/disaster-relief-fund    Checks can be mailed to United Way of the Plains with “Disaster Relief Fund” in the memo line, and they can be mailed to 245 N. Water, Wichita, KS 67202.

People needing assistance with shelter, basic needs or cleanup should call the United Way’s information line at 211

The website GoFundMe has also set up a hub to connect people to fundraisers for the people impacted by the tornado.
