Firefighters from several communities were sent to southeastern Reno County after an explosion and fire at a gas plant near Haven.

The explosion was reported around 1:15 Thursday afternoon at Haven Midstream, formerly the Tenawa Haven Gas Plant, at K-96 and Kent Road.    Some homes in the area were evacuated and Reno County emergency management director Adam Weishaar said a two-mile perimeter was set up around the gas plant.

Weishaar said the first crews found heavy smoke and flames and they heard two explosions.  The gas was shut off but fires continued to burn at the plant.  Crews from Colwich, Burrton, McPherson, Mt. Hope, and Wichita were sent to the plant to help battle the fire.

Reno County deputies closed K-96 in both directions between Yoder and Haven.  Weishaar said that was to allow tender trucks to cross the roadway to get water to the scene. The highway was reopened Friday morning.  People were being allowed back into Haven but the immediate area around the plant will remain closed.

Weishaar said two workers were taken to a Wichita hospital with minor injuries, and all plant workers have been accounted for.  There is no word on the cause of the fire.
