Bystanders help driver after car plunges into northeast Wichita fishing lake

Bystanders helped to get an unidentified man out of his car after it went off an entrance ramp and into a fishing lake in northeast Wichita.

The accident was reported around 1:15 p.m. Monday on the ramp from northbound I-135 to eastbound K-96.   The Kansas Highway Patrol said it’s believed the driver had a medical condition that caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

An off-duty firefighter and two citizens jumped into the water and broke a window in the car to get the driver out.   The driver was taken to a hospital with possible serious injuries.

The entrance ramp to K-96 was blocked for about two hours after the crash.
