Amended lawsuit filed against Goddard wildlife park over virus outbreak

An amended lawsuit has been filed against Tanganyika Wildlife Park after several people got sick from visiting Tanganyika’s splash park.

Patterson Legal Group is representing 47 people who became sick after visiting, and this updated suit covers all the plaintiffs together, instead of having multiple petitions.

Tanganyika is accused of failing to maintain sanitary conditions within the splash park, leading to a Shigella outbreak. The park is also accused of failing to warn guests once the park knew, or should have known about an outbreak.

“Businesses have a responsibility to the public to ensure that properties operate in a safe manner. The folks who have approached our law firm after unknowingly being exposed to the dangerous pathogen or pathogens at Tanganyika Falls Splash Park have suffered violent gastrointestinal conditions, breathing difficulties that have required hospitalizations, and other periods of severe illness,” said Coleman Younger, one of two attorneys representing those who were infected. “The situation continues to escalate for all involved, especially for the families and friends of children who fell seriously ill and are still recovering under the supervision of their medical providers at our local hospitals.”

Local and state health leaders began an investigation into Tanganyika on June 18, after linking several illnesses to the park. A release from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment states guests who visited the splash park between May 28 and June 18 may have been at risk of infection.
