Two boys injured in accidental shooting in southeast Wichita

Wichita police said an officer found two young boys who were injured after an accidental shooting at a south side apartment complex.

Police said the officer was patrolling the complex in the 8800 block of East Harry around 11:20 p.m. Monday.  He heard shouting and found a 12-year-old boy with a hand injury and a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the leg.   They were taken to a hospital for treatment and police said their injuries were not life-threatening.

Officers found that the boys had been playing with a handgun when it discharged, striking both of them.

Police are reminding Wichita residents to make sure guns are stored unloaded and security-locked.   Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about gun safety.

Across the U.S. around 1,300 children under the age of 18 die from shootings every year, and these incidents are preventable, according to the web site nationwidechildrens.org
