Shockers lose close game in “First Four” NCAA contest

A shot at the buzzer hit the rim of the basket, and Wichita State lost a battle with Drake Thursday evening in a “First Four” contest for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Drake won the game 53-52 in West Lafayette, Indiana.  The Shockers led by as much as 11 points but Drake came back to take a narrow lead with 4:16 to play.   Alterique Gilbert made a 3-point try at the buzzer for the Shockers, but the ball hit the rim.

Wichita State finishes with a 16-6 season and a regular season championship in the American Athletic Conference.   Drake advances to play number 6 seed USC in the West Region of the tournament.
