Governor Kelly on Friday urged the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to investigate the causes of system failures during the extreme weather in Kansas in order to protect residents utility price surges.

Kansas Corporation Commission Chair Andrew French, Commissioner Dwight Keen, and Commissioner Susan Duffy also signed the letter requesting a federal investigation.

They all cited that the recent energy pricing and supply emergency will undoubtedly have serious financial consequences for Kansas residents. French says that they are calling on a federal investigation since their jurisdictional reach is limited.

Governor Kelly and the Kansas Corporation Commission are specifically calling for the FERC to examine the circumstances that reduced the supply of natural gas and compromised pressures on interstate pipelines. They are additionally asking the FERC to use its authority under the Natural Gas Act to take all necessary actions to protect consumers and ensure the integrity of natural gas prices. Lastly, they are seeking an investigation into whether additional “reliability mechanisms” need to be put in place as a response to similar occurrences in the future.
