The Kansas Department of Labor is opening a new, specialized call center on February 1st specifically to handle questions related to Form 1099-G from claimants who filed for unemployment benefits in 2020.

The pandemic caused a high volume of unemployment claims, and the KDOL expects to send out a record number of 1099-G forms during tax season.

The center will handle potential cases of identity theft. The KDOL says they will make every effort to ensure 1099-G forms are not sent to identity theft victims, however it is possible that some may still receive a notice in the mail. Claimants are not liable to pay taxes on income they did not receive provided they can prove they are a victim of identity theft. Anyone with questions on this matter can call (785) 291-6059.

The call center will also answer questions related to unemployment taxes or Form 1099-G disputes. Claimants in the state of Kansas must choose to have taxes withheld when signing up for unemployment benefits. Electing not to can lead to a higher than expected tax notice in 2020. Form 1099-G disputes are typically instances when the amount shown on the form is incorrect. Claimants can call (785) 575-1461 for either of these issues.

The call center will be open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm.
