New security system aimed at preventing fraudulent unemployment claims in Kansas

The Kansas Department of Labor said Wednesday it is upgrading a security system to combat identity theft and fraudulent unemployment claims.

The Department said there have been a record number of unemployment claims because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and those claims have been processed by 40-year-old IT systems.  As a result, the state has had high numbers of fraudulent benefits claims.

The system update will provide a two-factor authentication to provide claimants with a more secure log in to their account.

The KDOL will take servers offline on January 30th in order to complete the system update, which is anticipated to be completed by February 2nd.

Unemployment benefits will be placed on a temporary hold at the beginning of this process, and they will resume when the new system is operational on February 2nd.
