Sedgwick County providing funding to help WSU coronavirus testing lab

Sedgwick County commissioners have approved funding to help with startup costs for a new coronavirus testing lab at Wichita State University.

The county is providing $1.38 million in federal coronavirus relief funds to help the molecular diagnostic lab on the WSU campus.   The lab was officially opened in October and it will handle tests from doctor’s offices and clinics across the state.   It will process up to 4,500 tests per day.

County commissioner David Dennis said increased testing will be critical for keeping schools and businesses open.   Dennis said he has talked with the local health officer, Dr. Garold Minns, and Dennis believes there will be new guidance soon on how testing can help get people back to work in local business and industry.    The county will work with state health officials on testing for schools to determine how students and teachers can get back into the classroom.
