Governor Kelly outlines plan for COVID-19 vaccine

Kansas governor Laura Kelly says the state should have 150,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine by the end of December.

At a news conference Wednesday, the governor said Pfizer will provide the first batch of about 24,000 doses, and it could arrive as soon as mid December, and the first shipment from Moderna will arrive soon thereafter.   There’s no word on when vaccines from AstraZeneca will be approved for use.

The governor said the vaccine distribution plan will follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control, and it will be made available on the principles of maximizing benefit, minimizing harm and working for equity, justice and fairness.

Kelly said the distribution will begin with Phase 1 groups, including high-risk health care workers and residents of nursing facilities, and more could be added to the group later. Phase 2 groups will be non-high-risk people over 65 years of age, and Phase 3 will be non-high-risk people under 65.    The governor said the state will work to vaccinate as many people as possible in Phase 1 by the end of the month.   People in Phases 2 and 3 will get the vaccine between winter and late spring.

The governor said with people needing two doses, the 150,000 vaccines would account for 75,000 people getting the vaccine this month.
