Sedgwick County jail inmate dies after COVID-19 diagnosis

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate at the county jail has died after testing positive for COVID-19.

The 68-year-old inmate was booked into jail in late October and later taken to a hospital with concerns about his mental status.  He was returned to the jail but had to return to the hospital on November 6th after a fall.   He was placed in intensive care and eventually was placed on a ventilator.    He died on Monday and an autopsy has been ordered.

The man’s name is not being released at the request of his family.   He was being held on felony sex crime charges.

The Sheriff’s Office said the man had a history of chronic medical issues before he was booked into jail.  This is the jail’s second in-custody death for 2020.
