More details to be announced on enforcement of Sedgwick County health order

Sedgwick County, the city of Wichita and other local officials are working on final details for the enforcement of the county’s latest health order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The order puts limits on mass gatherings and business occupancy, setting them at 100 or 50 percent of fire code capacity, whichever is less.  Bars and nightclubs will have to close at 11 p.m. and after that they can provide takeout or curbside services.   The order also requires the wearing of masks in public places, along with social distancing of six feet.

The city of Wichita will take part in the enforcement of the order, but city staff will not be involved in writing any citations.   They will report any violations to the county, and the cases will be handled in county court.   The violations could lead to fines of up to 100 dollars.   Other cities can also opt into the enforcement, and the county will provide enforcement for the unincorporated areas.    Valley Center and Derby have also decided to be involved in the enforcement.

People are urged NOT to call 911 to report any businesses in violation of the health order.   More information will be released next week on public reporting of violations.
