Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita announced Wednesday a plan to offer voluntary layoffs as the company goes through a restructuring because of the economic impact of the coronavirus and the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX jetliner.
The voluntary layoffs were offered to union and non-union salary and management employees this week.
The company said production rates for commercial aircraft have dropped from historic highs to much lower volumes, and there is no expectation for a quick recovery. Employees will have to turn in their layoff request by October 14th if they choose the voluntary option.
