Coronavirus relief funding approved for Wichita programs

Wichita city council members voted Tuesday to approve allocations of over $1 million in federal coronavirus relief funds to a variety of programs.

The funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act will be used for domestic violence shelter services, housing programs, homeless prevention, food boxes and other needs related to the pandemic.

The city is conducting a survey of landlords to find out more on the impact of the pandemic, and the city is starting a landlord incentive program to provide affordable housing for homeless individuals and families.

The city’s housing director, Sally Stang, said a number of evictions are expected when a Centers for Disease Control eviction moratorium expires in January.  She said the city is looking for additional funding sources to help with rental assistance and other needs.
